Ella was now a week old and it was Karen’s 50th birthday. The sun was shining through a gap in the curtains which were gently being blown up and down a little as the summer morning breeze blew them. It was one of those nice kind of warm breezes and the birds were singing in the trees.
There was a knock at the door to Karen’s room and outside waiting was Chris holding Ella in his arms with a gift bag of presents. Chris and Karen had agreed to take it in turns looking after Ella in the nights. One night she would stay in Karen’s room the next she’d stay in Chris’s.
“Can we come in?” Chris asked quietly as he wasn’t sure if Karen was up yet.
“Of course you can it’s your apartment after all”
Chris sat down beside Karen who was still lying under the warm covers. He put Ella down in the cot beside Karen’s bed and she smiled brightly at her mummy as if she knew it was Karen’s birthday. He put an arm around Karen’s shoulder and a leg on top of hers.
“Happy Birthday gorgeous” he said and passed her the little bag of gifts.
“Chris!”
“What?”
“What did I say, no presents”
“And you knew I wasn’t going to listen”
“Thank you”
They sat like this in a peaceful silence for the next few minutes and Ella had fallen asleep.
“Are you going to open them then?” Chris asked like an excited child.
“Yes, but I like laying here like this it’s nice”
Chris moved the pillows for her so she could sit up to open the presents then he put his arm back around her shoulder. She placed the gift bag in her lap. Inside the purple shinny bag there was three presents wrapped in shinny paper neatly to match the bag. The first one she pulled out was the biggest – it was a summer dress that she had seen a few weeks back whilst she was pregnant but they didn’t do it in maternity sizes so she didn’t get it. The second present she unwrapped carefully was a necklace with a small diamond on it and the last was a bracelet that matched and he’d got it made so it would fit on her tiny, tiny wrist.
“Ah, thank you Chris you didn’t have to buy me any of this Stephen wouldn’t have bothered”
“Well I’m not Stephen you deserve to be treated better than that can I officially say that you’re my girl now so I will spoil you rotten as much as I like” they both laughed and Karen reached up to kiss his cheek.
“Thank you, they really are beautiful”
“Just like you and I know I said no affair until I’ve spoke to Jill but I think you are allowed a special kiss on your special birthday” Karen moved the presents to the side and Chris rolled over so he was lying on top of Karen and her began to kiss her passionately and she kissed him back.
"You really are a good kisser Karen baby"

“You look gorgeous babe” Chris said making Karen blush a bit when she walked into the kitchen and over to where he was standing.
“Thank you. Can you put this on me please?” Karen asked handing Chris the necklace he’d brought her.
“Of course I can. Does the dress fit ok we can take it back if it doesn’t?”
“Yes fits perfectly, thank you” she replied turning around so her could put the necklace on her. He moved her hair gently out the way so he could do the necklace up then he place a kiss on the back of her neck.
The kiss made Karen shiver and get butterflies in her stomach it made her feel special; he had no idea what he was doing to her, she felt so happy. His arms made their way around her waist and she could feel him breathe on the back of her neck as he pulled her closer to him.
“Chris, please don’t …” she closed her eyes sadly as she said it.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t say to me we can’t have anything more than a friendly cuddle until you’ve spoke to Jill and then start kissing me and all this…”
“But why not, I’m just showing you I love you?”
“And I love you too but…” she stopped to think about what she was going to say before she said it.
“But…” he said kissing her neck again.
“Because I want more Chris that’s why and you doing this to me it makes me want more, even more” there was a hint of sadness in her voice.
“And we can have more I promise you very soon. As soon as she comes back off holiday with the boys I will phone her and tell her then you can have me all you want”
“And how long is that going to be?”
“A couple more days”
“But I want you now I can’t wait a couple more days, God I sound so selfish and needy”
“You don’t I know exactly how you’re feeling I want you now just as much but in the mean time it will just be moments like this is that ok with you?”
“No, it’s not actually but I will have get on with it won’t I” she snapped not meaning too.
“I’m sorry Karen but surely it’s better than nothing at all – no kiss, no cuddle so stop being moody I’m trying my best to make you happy already” he replied seriously and a little cross with her.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to snap at you like that I just love you so much I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful because I’m really grateful you’ve done so much more than Stephen would have I wouldn’t have got any of this. Last year I got card that I’m sure he’s given me before and a box of chocolates then he went off to work I didn’t even get a birthday kiss in the evening” she turned around to face him and wrapped her arms around his neck. They stood looking into one another’s eyes for a while kissed then broke off to sort Ella out who when she started crying from the living room in her mosses basket.

“It’s so hot today already and it’s only 9 o’clock” Karen said as cradled little Ella in her arms.
“It’s meant to reach 28 degrees by this afternoon” he walked over to where Karen was currently standing and she past Ella to him.
“Shall we go swimming – take Ella with us I think she’d like it?” she asked. Chris being a typical bloke was in a daze picturing Karen in a bikini.
“Yes – no – do you want to go swimming I don’t mind?”
“Sorry, yeah we will go swimming” he replied with a cheeky smile on his face.

When they arrived at the pool Chris went in one changing room and Karen and Ella went in the changing room next to him. It didn’t take Chris very long to undress and put his shorts on but it took Karen about 10 minutes longer as she had to sort Ella out as well as herself and she wanted to look nice for Chris. Chris went off to find a locker taking his stuff with him and then would go back to get Karen’s stuff, and hopefully she’d be ready by the time he got back.
He was right by the time he’d got back Karen had opened the changing room door. She had her bag over her shoulder and was holding Ella high up on her hip. Chris stood in another daze admiring her tiny figure. It was perfect everything about her was perfect. Karen had been so lucky to be back to her size 6/8 figure within a few days after Ella’s birth. Her bronzed skin, so smooth glittered in the light that was above them, she was wearing a baby blue bikini – the top was a halter neck strap that was tied perfectly in a bow at the back of her neck and was much to Chris’s delight.
“And what are you staring at?” she said with a cheeky giggle at the end walking out in front of Chris and finding her way to the locker area.
“Your fit body” he admitted straight away.
“You sound like a teenage boy Chris saying it like that, but I will take that as a compliment however I’m pretty sure my body isn’t ‘fit’ as you put it this time last week I was in labour for god sakes I have baby bump fat. However this wasn’t true she didn’t look like she’d just had a baby.
“Well I don’t see baby bump fat when I look at you if anything you need to put on a bit of fat” he said cheekily.
“I’d be very careful what you say” she turned to look at him catching him having a good look at her bum as she walked at the same time and winked at him.
After Karen’s stuff was away in the locker they made their way to the pool. It was an in doors swimming pool and had only been open a few weeks so was very clean and new. There was one very large pool with slides and waves, a smaller pool dived into lanes, a kid’s pool with toys in it and smaller slides and three Jacuzzis. Karen took Ella into the baby pool for a little while whilst Chris swam in the lanes, then they all moved to the large pool and putting Ella in a rubber ring and Chris through her gently up and down in the air which made her laugh lot’s, and Karen and Chris had a fun 20 minutes splashing each other with water like two kids. They spent most of their time in the Jacuzzi though. They started off sitting opposite one another chatting casually, then Chris moved over to Karen sitting her on his lap with Ella in her arms and began moving his hands around her body and the casual talking turned into seductive whispers in her ear.

Chris had been in the kitchen talking on the phone for the last half hour or so whilst Karen was in the living room, having some relaxing time watching TV, with Ella fast asleep in her arms.
“Who were you on the phone too?” Karen asked when Chris came in and sat down cuddle up next to her.
“Dan, he’s having a BBQ tonight and wondered if we’d like to go the whole of the crew are going to be there?”
“What did you say?”
“Yes we’d be there at six. Everyone is so excited to see little Ella you know especially Dan it will be like a new little sister to him won’t it?”
“Will, you know, she be there?” Karen couldn’t quite bring herself to say Jayne’s name it still made her feel sick inside.
“No, she was invited but Stephens taken her away to some exotic country for the week so she couldn’t make it”
“He never took me to exotic countries” Karen muttered and Chris could hear her sadness. He pulled her in closer to him resting his head gently on hers.
“I will take you somewhere exotic after summer just before we start back with training for the new series” he said kissing her cheek and smiled when he saw the smile appear on her face.
“Ah I love you”
“Love you too baby. Our exotic holiday will be so much better than theirs” Chris’s childish remark made Karen laugh.
They arrived at Dan’s house at exactly 6pm like Chris had said they would. There were already loads of people there and they could hear the loud music and smell the BBQ before they’d got to the front door. They knocked a few times but there was no answer so Karen used the spare key that Dan had given her to let them in.
“Good thing it’s only us they are leaving stranded at the front door” Karen laughed. Chris was pushing Ella’s buggy backwards and forwards to keep her calm and also had Karen’s handbag over his shoulder too whilst she tried to work out what key it was. She had so many keys half she didn’t know where they even come from or what they were for.
“Surprise” everyone jumped up from nowhere and shouted nearly giving Karen a heart attack.
“Ah thank you everyone even though you did near on give me a heart attack” they all were laughing and Dan came through giving Karen and hug and passing her a glass of her favourite wine.
“Daniel! You’re as bad as Chris I told him not to get me anything and what does he do buy me loads and I said I didn’t need a party of people fussing over me so what do you do. It’s just another year older nothing special but thank you this is wonderful” she said giving him a big hug and he kissed her cheek.
Dan took Karen’s hand leading her outside where everyone was sitting in groups around several tables. Dan’s garden was huge. There was a table by the door filled with lots of food and drink and the BBQ was on and smelt so nice. Karen was led to a special chair at the end of the table that had been covered in cushions and blankets and her a birthday banner across the top of it, and there was another glass of wine with a whole bottle of wine waiting for her to open it. There was a pile of cards with her name on in front also waiting for her and a presents as well.
“Here’s your thrown madam” Dan said cheekily.
Chris had followed behind still with Karen’s hand bag over his shoulder and was pushing Ella through the house to the back garden. Karen thanked everyone giving them all kisses and hugs and then pulled a chair over next to her for Chris to sit on.
Ella was passed around everyone and a couple of hours later she was passed back to Karen when she wouldn’t stop crying guessing it were feeding time. Karen disappeared inside for about 20 minutes to go and feed her as she didn’t think everyone would appreciate her feeding while they were all eating. She had been breast feeding Ella since she was born as she wasn’t keen on all the added things that were in the milk you make up for babies.
“I’m just going to feed Ella shouldn’t be too long” Karen said to Chris so he didn’t worry where she was.
“Ok I will come and see you in a minute”
Karen had found a quiet spot in living room as everyone was outside chatting away about their holidays and what they’d been up too since the tour had ended. 10 minutes later and Karen was joined by Chris on the sofa. She had just finished feeding Ella and was now winding her patting her back gently.
Chris put an arm around Karen’s shoulder and cuddled her.
“Looks like Ella’s tiered come on put her in her buggy and get drinking that wine and have a good time” Chris took Ella from Karen and put her in the buggy putting a blanket over her feet.
“Now you be good little princess Ella let mummy have some time to relax” he whispered in Ella’s ear who was now soundly sleeping and kissing her little nose. He pulled Karen up off the sofa and wrapped his arms around her body kissing her on the lips a couple of times before they made their way back into the garden and taking Ella with them.
