It was 1am on a Wednesday morning. Karen woke up, on the sofa surrounded by soggy tissues. She had a thumping headache from all the crying. Her eyes were red and swollen. Her phone started ringing. It was Stephen. She didn’t want to answer it, didn’t want to talk to him. Or have anything to do with him. She thought of all the things he said last night. She wanted to be comforted, to have a cuddle maybe. She wanted Chris. They’d got really close recently…maybe even beyond normal. He was always there for her, and her for him. But she knew if he came over, he would see the bruise on her arm. She knew Stephen only grabbed her to stop her from walking away. But Chris wouldn’t take it so well.
Her phone then rang for a second time. And it was Chris. She answered it quickly. “Hello?” he said. The sound of his voice brought tears to her eyes. She loved him. But she knew friendship is all they would have. She couldn’t talk. “Karen? Are you there hun?” she just about managed the words “I need you here now.” He heard the fear and sadness in her voice. “I take it you’ve seen Stephen…I’ll be right over darling.” He hung up the phone, and went out to his car and sped to her apartment. He went through 4 sets of red traffic lights…he didn’t care. He loved her, but he knew that friendship was all they’d have.

As soon as he parked his car, her door flung open and Karen ran out and wrapped her arms around Chris. She didn’t care that she had her nightie on, or her fluffy slippers. She wanted a cuddle, and to be with him. She cried into his shoulder for a few minutes while he comforted her. They stayed outside just hugging. They hadn’t even said hello to each other. Karen surprisingly wasn’t that cold. He had wrapped his jacket around her, and his body was warm. A few moments passed and then Chris said “let’s go in. You must be freezing.” Karen looked reluctant. She was cold, but just wanted to stay hugging him like that forever. After about 30 seconds she finally said “Do we have to? I mean, I just want a hug for a minute!” “I promise, as soon as we get in I will hug you for as long as you want. I’m just worried you’ll make yourself ill, that’s all.” Karen sighed, but knew he was right.
When they got inside, the warm air of her apartment blasted them. She actually realised she was freezing. Chris shut the door and pulled her close to him, gently playing with her hair. They were both thinking the same thing; “what would it be like if we were together?” There was another long silence, but Chris finally broke it off. “Are you going to tell me what happened? You don’t have… Karen what the hell is that on your arm?” “A bruise…I, I knocked it… on the door handle…” “Swear on my life… that that’s what it’s from. Swear!” Karen heard the panic in his voice” “Well if it doesn’t work it won’t hurt to do it then will it?” “Chris…you know I don’t… like that.” “Well, you said it yourself, it doesn’t work!” Karen started crying again. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I know what I am thinking probably didn’t happen. I just…” “You just what?” “Care about you, that’s all.”

Karen just looked down at the ground for a few seconds, she knew she couldn’t lie to him about it; but she couldn’t tell the truth either. “Chris…can I tell you the whole story?” “So I am right then. I am going to knock his block off!!!!!!” Chris was fuming, Karen always knew when he was angry because the tops of his ears would go red (this time they went purple with steam coming of them…) “well I don’t know Chris, he didn’t purposely do it! Please, don’t get angry… just let me tell you what happened ok?” Karen was now quite calm, and a lot more then Chris. “Fine…but I can’t make any promises about killing the pillock.” Karen then did get a little upset, but Chris did see that, and tried to calm down. “Chris… I don’t know how to explain what happened.” “Sit down, have a little think.” Chris said, trying his new tactic. He grabbed her hand, walked over to the sofa and sat down; practically dragging her down with him. He had his arm around her, her hand was on his thigh with her head rested into his neck and his chin was just resting on her head. There was a long silence, Chris was so angry and wound up with Stephen. He did try to keep it to himself; he didn’t even know what had happened yet…
“He came in with a smug look on his face. I made us both a coffee and we sat down. He told me he came to tell me about the girls, what they were going to do when the three of them go to Spain. I wanted to know, I know their grown up but they are my babies and I care about them.” “Of course you do hun.” “Anyway he lied and asked me back… as in for us to be toge.ther again… he said he was willing to forget things if i was...” “What!?!” “I said no Chris…he demanded why so I told him… I’m in love with someone else.” Chris’ heart sank. He loved her, so much. But clearly the feelings were only one way…
