“C’mon Jayne - one more time through then I think we have it,” Chris said, raring to go again. “Chris, I think we had it an hour ago when you said that!” “Sorry, I just want it to be perfect!” “Okay, one more time then I’m going home. The kids will be wondering where I am!”
Chris was always so demanding, particularly of Jayne, and especially when it came to his and Jayne’s routines. They worked on a tight schedule and he always made Jayne stay late hours, just so it would be perfect for Sunday, which it always was - or at least seemed to be. At least if they put all the hours and effort into it then it wouldn’t feel as bad if something were to go wrong, Chris then had that confident feeling knowing he’s done all he could. They got into their starting positions and as soon as the high tempo music started they leapt into action, using just about every muscle in their bodies, expressing themselves hugely through the music. Jayne was being thrown around with her flexible body bending and twisting in any and every shape imaginable.
There was one particularly complex lift in the middle of the routine that had taken them a while to master but when they had it looked simply spectacular, and they both made it look so effortless. Jayne had fallen out of the lift a few times whilst they were initially working on it, but nothing serious. This time round however their hands did not interlock in the way they should have, and mid lift Jayne felt herself quivering slightly, and Chris’s hand shaking beneath her.
What happened went by so quickly neither of them had a particularly clear memory of it. Chris’s arm gave way, at the same time he misplaced his skate, coming crashing down onto the ice, twisting his left knee, banging it on the ice, and Jayne came tumbling down on top of him, whacking her head against Chris’s chest. Jayne got off lightly on the injury front - no blood, maybe a few bruises would appear in the morning, but she swiftly got back up on her feet, expecting Chris to follow her as usual. However when he tried to sit up his back went into spasm forcing him back down, so he lay still on the ice for a few moments.
“Chris? Chris! Are you okay?” Jayne asked with urgency creeping into her voice. “Erm… I’ll be okay in a minute, I don’t know what happened,” Chris seemed a little dazed as if he hadn’t a clue what had just occurred, he looked like he didn’t know where he was. “If I hadn’t fallen so close to you I could have knocked my head really quite hard on that ice…” Jayne thought aloud, thankful for Chris’s presence whilst skating around the rink a number of times. “Chris, what’s wrong? You’ve been laying there for about five minutes!” Jayne was really quite concerned now as he looked in total agony, and normally he was not the sort of character to let a fall push him down - she knew he was injured because after any other fall he would be back up skating again within seconds. He had now managed to sit up but his knee was throbbing and he couldn’t move any further. “It’s my knee… as I fell it twisted and then I landed rather heavily on it, and it’s the same one I’ve had all those problems with in the past…” he trailed off, speaking through the pain, and Jayne could sense it in his voice. She had a fixed look of worry on her , what if it wasn’t better for the show on Sunday? “Jayne you look petrified, are you okay?” he said, before attempting to get up of the ice again - and this time succeeding. “I’m just worried about you and your knee that’s all!” Chris laughed, “Don’t you be worrying about me, I’ll be fine, trust me. You just worry about yourself.” “As long as you’re sure…” “Honestly Jayne, you worry far too much!” “Oh I’m so sorry for showing my concern, next time I won’t bother!” Jayne snapped, almost angrily back at him. “Okay calm down! Right - let’s do this routine once more, then we can go home!” “I really don’t think that’s a good idea… what about your knee?” “Oh it’s fine now, it just does that sometimes!” “Chris last time you said that you had to have an operation on it and had a month of the ice! Do you really want to risk that again?” “No I’m sure, I’m all for taking risks! Come on once more then we can go home.”
They had only got through a few bars of music, Chris and Jayne were at opposite ends of the rink skating towards each other at speed, when Chris suddenly felt a shooting pain through his knee which he tried to ignore, but the pain was too powerful it was impossible to push to the side. He came to a holt and then skated off the rink, collapsing on one of the benches on the rink side - Jayne came rushing over as soon as she saw Chris escape the ice, it wasn’t like him. She sat herself down next to him, signalling for a first aid member to come quickly.
“Chris what happened?!” Jayne exclaimed, her voice full of panic and her delicate face swept with worry. “I just felt a shooting pain through my knee… its killing me!” “I told you we should just called it a day after the fall! We can’t afford to have you injured now can we?!” “I know, I know, you were right… I’m sure it’ll be okay though by tomorrow,” he informed her confidently, though Jayne was not feeling confident at all, even if here partner was so sure. A few moments later the paramedic was over to check Chris’s knee over, to see what damage he had done. Chris explained he had fell and twisted it, followed by a good whack on the ice. He was advised to rest it overnight, ice it and keep it elevated, and he was to have physic on it first thing the next morning.
Jayne acted as his human crutch to help him out to the taxi, and supported him as he struggled to clamber into the back seat, before she got in beside him. Normally he would have had Karen with him and to go home to; she was excellent at nursing him when he was ill or injured, but that morning she had left him for a few days to take a break and stay with her two daughters, meaning Chris was currently all by himself in the house.
“Chris have you rang Karen and told her yet?” “No… I don’t intend to either! I don’t want to worry her, she’ll ring me later anyway, she always does before she goes to sleep. Or maybe we’ll Skype in a bit?” Chris said casually, he knew what Karen would be like if he told her, and it wouldn’t be a positive reaction. “Are you going to be okay by yourself?” “Yes yes, I’ll be fine - don’t worry!” “I would offer to stay to look after you but I’ve really got to get home to Phil and the kids,” Jayne replied apologetically. “Oh no don’t ill be fine honestly, I’m just going to make myself a sandwich and then ice my knee.” “Okay, well just ring me if you need anything, you know where I am,” Jayne told him caringly, rubbing his arm as the words left her lips. “Okay, thanks Jayne,” he said as he looked into her eyes, hugged her and then carefully climbed out the car and limped down to the front door, fumbled around for the key, whilst waving to Jayne as the taxi drove off down the road. When he got in he dumped his bag and skates in the hallway, kicked off his shoes, flicked on the tv, made himself a cup of tea and a sandwich and sat down with his knee propped up with an ice pack moulded around it and the laptop balanced on his knees.
He rang Karen on Skype and straight away she could tell something wasn’t right so he told her all about the injury and she wanted to get back home to see and look after him - she would have left then and there if she could but he eventually managed to calm her down and convince her she didn’t need to come home and that she needed to forget about him and enjoy her time off with the girls. They were chatting away for a good couple of hours before they finally logged off, both headed for bed.
Chris had an early start in the morning, the alarm was set for 6am, but he didn’t sleep well at all, his knee made the sleep incredibly discomforting and he had only had a couple of decent hours rest before the alarm was ringing and he was tempted to reach out and hit the snooze button, but he knew if he did then he wouldn’t get up again, and it was going to take him a lot longer to get ready seeing as he couldn’t stand on two legs, and he had no one to help him. He took things slowly and got himself bathed and dressed, then headed downstairs to get some breakfast before he left the house, just on time as Jayne had just pulled up outside to pick him up.
“How’s the knee honey?” Jayne asked straight away before he even had a chance to get in the car. “It will be alright, this physio will help it… I’ll be on the ice by this afternoon you just wait!” he said cheekily, grimacing through the pain as he sank into the comfy seat and pulled the door closed before they drove off. “Oh no you won’t mister, you’re having a day off whether you like it or not! You’re lucky to even be coming in at all today, it’s lucky we have physio on site!”
They chatted happily on the way to the rink and when they got there Chris was called for his physio, which he was a little concerned about, but he knew it’d help. “Jayne… will you come with me?” “What do you want me to do, hold your hand?” she said joking around and teasing him. “Actually, that would be great thanks. I have a feeling this is gonna hurt.” “Okay, whatever makes you happy.” Jayne followed Chris to the physic room where the Dancing on Ice physicist was waiting, Chris climbed onto the table whilst Jayne assisted him, he then rolled up his trouser leg up to mid-thigh, to make his knee at easy access for the treatment. “Right, now where does the problem seem to be?” Alice the physio lady asked him, he was so injury prone she was very much used to seeing him. Chris directed her to where the painful area was and she began to massage it, gently soothing away the pain, but it made Chris rather squeamish to begin with as she did this; he screwed up his face and tightly gripped Jayne’s hand - this was the bit he hated. “Chris! Do you have to squeeze my hand that tight? I thought I was here for moral support to be your stress ball!” Jayne exclaimed, shaking her wrist as soon as it was released from Chris’s deathly grip. “Sorry Jayne… I told you I needed you to hold my hand!” he said cheekily, grimacing through the pain. “Okay… just not as tight next time, yeah?”
The intense physio treatment went on for about an hour, but Chris let Jayne go and have her fun on the ice after a while, it was only the start that was the most painful, it seemed to numb as it went on. Jayne was thrilled when those words came out of Chris’s mouth saying she could go - she was itching to get her skates on.
It was however going to be a lot more hard work on her behalf, she had to get through as many couples as she could to give them help and support with their routines, and without Chris and Karen - down two coaches - it wasn’t getting any easier. Nevertheless, she buckled down and got to work, and before she knew it, it was time for a lunch break and a quick star bucks.
Only when she got a moment to sit down was when Jayne realised Chris still hadn’t shown his face and come through to the rink to see anyone, which surprised her as she knew he couldn’t still be in physio, 4 hours later since she had left him. She thought he would be so keen to get on the ice himself even though he couldn’t, he would have come round to watch and coach a little from the sidelines. Jayne finished her lunch quickly and still had a little time to spare before she had to get back to work, so she headed behind the rink to see if Chris was hiding in any of the rooms back there, he could be filling in some paperwork, she thought.
Sure enough she found him sitting by himself in one of the little rooms behind the rink which acted as their mini dressing room while they were there. She knocked on the door and let herself in before listening for a response, however Chris was not in a position she expected to find him. He was sat on a chair in the corner with his knee iced and strapped up, propped up on another chair opposite, and was sat with his head in his hands, definitely not in the mood to be seeing anyone.
“Chris! What’s the matter? I thought you’d be out there by the rink bossing us all around by now!” Jayne said jokingly, and then leaning over to give her partner a hug. “Oh Jayne…” Chris looked up, looking extremely distraught and almost vulnerable looking up at her into her eyes, he could barely get his words out, “They just told me I wont be able to skate on Sunday,” he finally managed it, returning to look at the ground - he was devastated.
Jayne almost couldn’t believe the news herself, she was nearly as upset as Chris was; a million thoughts running through her mind and as she processed them she was silenced, just standing staring at him. Skating without him? Again? What was she to do? She couldn’t choreograph another new routine in three days? As much as she had loved performing without Chris the first time round, that was it - she certainly hadn’t planned to do it again and didn’t expect she would have to, and she most defiantly didn’t want to. Maybe she should just forget about the whole performing thing and tell the producers they would have to find something else to fill the time that would have been their routine? No, she couldn’t do that. She had to find a way… maybe just a solo piece without any other skaters? But would that seem like she was stealing the limelight… all these thoughts were whizzing round all the time she was just staring at Chris, she didn’t know what to say, so she just hugged him lovingly again…
