Christopher dean do you take this Jayne Torvill to be your lawfully wedded wife in sickness and in health in good times and in bad " "I do " he answered with no hesitation whatsoever staring Jayne up and down but stopping his gaze at her beautiful blue eyes and staring deeply into them as she stood in front of him nervously in a strapless cut floor length white embroidered dress which clinched in her tiny waist it also had a slight purple/lilac tinge to it and she looked like a true princess with her blonde curled locks precisely positioned at the back of her head and a small sparkly silver tiara neatly placed on her head, done by best friend Karen "jayne Torvill do you take this Christopher dean to be your lawfully wedded husband in sickness and in health in good times and in bad" Jayne fell silent for a few moments before stuttering out finally "I... I... " tears ran down her face and she had to leave the room leaving Chris standing alone totally mortified she quickly made an escape while she still could she had a sick feeling in her stomach and had left every head in the church turned toward the open doors no one had expected anything like that to happen.

Karen was the first to run out after Jayne to see what was the matter, she didn't have a clue what the problem was because Jayne had told Karen everything was fine and happy between the two and she was really excited to be getting married finally after all those years of skating. As it happened though Jayne had been hiding a secret and ever since Chris had proposed to her things had gone down hill at one point she had been really quite depressed yet somehow managed to hide it from everyone and no one would ever find out, or so she thought, but that wasn't all she was hiding. As Karen left the room she was frantically searching the whole place to Jayne but found nothing and no one, and no clues as to where she might have gone and now she was worried about her best friend and where she had disappeared to. She called her name getting louder and louder but still nothing came of it. She was feeling sick herself now at the thought of loosing her best friend and suddenly heard the screeching of tires outside the front of the church, immediately rushing out to see what it was, petrified.
"JAYNE!" she yelled as her friend stopped right in front of the car that had just halted to a stop, Jayne looked like she was in a trance as this stranger to Karen got out the car and quickly hurried Jayne in, Karen had awful thoughts racing through her mind and no idea what to do she'd gone blank. No one had followed her, everyone else was still inside that church half expecting both girls to come trailing back in and the wedding to continue. "JAYNE!!!" Karen yelled again as the car drove away going about 40mph out of the carpark and down the main road. Karen stopped in her tracks completely lost in everything, Chris finally came out to find her sitting on the edge of the pathway in a daze.
"Karen? What the hell are you doing? Where's Jayne? Did you find her?" he fired obvious questions at her that seemed to come out of his mouth with no warning whatsoever but he couldn't stop himself. "Yes, yes I've found her, that's why I'm sitting out here in the cold by myself on the fricking pavement!!" Karen snapped back at him loudly. "Where is she? Did you see her?" Chris continued with his unanswerable questions. "I saw her alright... she nearly got herself ****ing run over by some freak in a car who whisked her away about 10 minutes ago and I've been sitting here ever since" "what? like, she's been kidnapped?" "well I've never seen that bloke before that's for sure" Karen continued still just randomly staring into space as she couldn't bring herself to look at Chris directly. "What kind of car was it" "I don't bloody know do I??? I wasn't really paying attention to that I was more concerned about the fact your supposed to be wife has just been taken away by some kind of freak of nature!!"
"Karen shhhh" Chris comforted her surprisingly, she was bawling her eyes out and just leant against Chris's warm body, and although Chris was obviously upset he wasn't totally distraught by the events, maybe just because it hadn't quite sunk into him yet - Karen was much more upset. "Where is she Chris" she sobbed lightly. "I don't know Karen I really don't... If I did I don't think this would be happening" he said sadly. They were both still sat on the pavement together cuddling. A huge crowd of friends and family were still in the church waiting to find out what was going on, but no one thought to go and see what they could find out, people were just chatting amongst themselves not really knowing what to do, it was all a very awkward situation for most people in there. "w-w-what if we don't find her" Karen said now just imagining the worst of all, scary images rushing through her head that she didn't know how to cope with, she tried to shut them out of her brain by squeezing her eyes tight shut, but it wasn't working, they were getting worse. "Chris I'm scared, scared of what's going to happen to her, where she's gone, what's happening" "I know I am too Kaz...I don't know what we're going to do, I guess everyone in there is going to have to go home...this is such an embarassment..." Chris admitted, but he was also petrified about Jayne. "I'll go and get Dan, he can tell them all to get lost... in the nicest possible way of course... stay there karen i'll be back in a minute" he reassured her and patted her back before getting up to get back in the church, quickly pull dan to one side and pull him outside to talk to him. When the back doors opened every pair of eyes in the room turned to face them and Chris just wished the ground would open and swallow him up, but he quickly got dan's attention whilst trying to ignore everyone else in the room.
"What's up mate what's going on" dan asked as he followed Chris outside back to where Karen was still sitting on the pavement. "What's Karen doing down there?! Where's Jayne?" "We don't know, we thought you might know something, anything that might give us a clue... Karen saw her get into a car and drive off with a man she'd never seen before" "no i haven't got a clue who that might be..." dan said puzzled by the situation, he was calm to begin with even with all the current commotion but even he was now getting worried. "and Karen's very upset at the moment with seeing Jayne run off like that, she's been sitting here the whole time" Chris said. "karen... karen come with me darling, in fact get in the car let's get you home" he said talking to her like a small child, but it was comforting to her to hear a good friend's voice so she vulnerably followed his lead as he took hold of her hand and walked her to the car. "everything will be okay do you hear me karen" he said reassuringly. "jayne will come back i promise, and everything will be just fine" he said hopefully, praying that he could keep to his word and jayne would return, and there wouldnt be any major problems.
"I'm scared dan i don't know what to do" Karen was still crying a little as she climbed into the passenger seat of dan's land rover, chris following closely behind them. "Dan one thing before you go and take care of karen" "yeah mate" "will you tell everyone the wedding's off and they all need to go home...i can't do it and now i know jayne's actually cleared off" "yeah course i will... i'm so sorry mate... just stay there with karen and make sure she doesn't go anywhere so i can take her home" "yep" dan ran back into the church and made his announcements, then grabbed Emma and Laura who were sitting right at the front of the church. "dan what's happening? and where's mum?" the youngest, Laura, begged to find out. "Try not to worry girls.... Jayne's done a runner and your mum's really worried about her and very upset, i'm taking her home, so you two come too and we can all take care of her and help find Jayne too..." "ok" they agreed uneasily.
When they got in Dan made them all cups of tea and bought them into where they were all sitting in Karen's front room, the girls were all squidged up on the two seater sofa, and Chris had got himself a chair from the dining room and bought it in, and one for Dan too once he'd got everyone a drink. Karen explained to the girls and Dan what she'd seen Jayne do and they were all now really concerned about their good friend, but there really wasn't much they could do except wait and see what happened as no one had any idea who the mystery man might be or where Jayne might have been whisked off to. They thought about reporting it to the police but didn't know what to do or say as they really had no idea, so they thought they would wait a while until later that evening to see if they got any more information or clues about where Jayne could possibly be.
After a couple of hours of chatting about the endless possibilities none of them had got any further. Little did any of them know, Karen's phone had been vibrating for the past hour in her bag which had simply been dumped in the hallway. "What are we going to do" Chris was basically in tears now he was petrified about all the things that might have happened and he couldn't hold in his emotions any longer, for the whole day he'd been trying to keep strong, now he just broke down and burst into floods of tears. Dan offered him a big friendly man hug but it made him feel worse. "I don't know I really don't... all we can do is sit and wait for any news" Dan said trying to be reassuring and comforting towards them all. Karen's tears had all run out by this point as she'd been crying practically since Jayne had left the alter, Emma and Laura just sat in silence either side of their mum, awkwardly gripping their empty mugs.
"Karen check your phone again?" Chris begged her causing Karen to look up for the first time in about 20 minutes, the whole time she'd just been staring at the stained marks on the bottom of her cup. "Oh god I forgot I didn't have it with my oh my god what if Jayne's rung or been trying to get hold of me" Karen rushed off to find her BlackBerry as Chris stared at the screen of his iPhone which displayed a picture of him and Jayne on the night of their engagement, Jayne's head was resting on his shoulder and she had her left hand held up to the camera. He missed her so much. A couple of minutes later Karen came running back into them all with a slightly different expression on her face; none of them could make out what it meant or whether she had good or bad news, she was just staring at the screen. 'I'm Sorry' read a text from Jayne, and 10 missed calls. "Well?!" Chris demanded after another 5 minutes passed and Karen still hadn't said anything. "she said she's sorry..." she told them in a slight daze. "sorry? sorry? is that all she can bloody say?!" Chris was fuming and he stood up to go and see the text for himself. "10 missed calls? Karen ring her back!" he demanded again, giving Karen a slight nudge to bring her back to reality and out of the trance.
Her fingers fumbled around with the keys as she tried to dial the number she normally knew like the back of her hand but today it seemed to be buried in the back of her brian somewhere. Her long manicured nails were getting stuck in between the buttons and she was getting frustrated with it too, but eventually she managed to ring the number and a picture of her and Jayne came up on the screen as the number dialled. It rang and rang, but there was no answer and after about 10 rings Karen gave in. "Ring again then!" Chris encouraged her. They rang again another 5 times hoping for a response but got nothing, so they had to give in, and go back to waiting in hope that they might hear from her - they were all desperate, just to know that she was okay, to hear her voice again and maybe even get some sense out of her about what she was doing, whatever that might be.
Just when they were about to give in hope and go back to their own homes, Karen's phone rang making everyone in the room jump out of their seats. Chris's eyes lit up hoping it was Jayne the love of his life, and Karen's hand flew to the phone which was about to fall down the crack in the sofa next to her. She pressed the green phone button 'accept' quicker and harder than she ever had before, as if it was like the more pressure she put on it the quicker it would pick up. "Hello?!" "Karen?" Karen had never been happier to hear someone's voice in all her life. "Jayne! Where the hell are you, you've got us all worried sick! What's going on? Are you okay?" Karen continued to quick fire questions at Jayne barely leaving her any time to actually answer any of them. "Karen stop it! I'm fine... well I was" Jayne laughed having no idea how much panic she had caused everyone. "What do you mean you were? What's happened? Where are you? Who was that man? And I don't know why you are laughing Jayne Torvill you have no idea how much you have frightened us for the last few hours!" "I know... I'm sorry I realise that now I am truly really sorry I promise I am... I will explain everything later, I just had to get hold of you to let you know I was alright" "Well we could have done with this call yonks ago Jayne! Why can't you talk to me now? Do you want to speak to Chris? He's killing himself here" "No! I mean, no thanks... I'd really rather not... tell him... I'm sorry" "Jayne you're making no sense" "Just... urgh! I'll ring you again later and tell you more I promise, I'm really sorry I've got to go... bye" and as quick as the call had begun Jayne cut off the phone line and left Karen still sitting there with the phone against her ear. Almost in slow motion her hand floated down releasing the phone so it bounced into her lap.
"Well??" Chris demanded to know everything as soon as he could. "Where the hell is she?" "I don't know..." The words Karen had just heard from Jayne were rewinding and playing, rewinding and playing, over and over in her head, but nothing became any clearer. "What do you mean you don't know?!" "I don't know... she sounds perfectly fine like her normal cheery self, but she wouldn't tell me anything, who she's with, why she disappeared, where she is.... nothing" "Why did she ring you back then" "She said she only rang to tell me she was okay, but she couldn't say anything else" "Is she ever going to tell us?" "She said she'd ring back later... I don't know what to do" "I don't think there is anything we can do to be honest... we'll just have to wait for the phone call again won't we"
"I think I'm going to head home... you two will be okay right? Let me know if you hear anything" Dan said standing up to get his coat and leave. It was now about 7pm and it was pitch black outside, the drive way was lit by a single dim street light. "Yeah of course we will..." Karen said as she too stood up to show Dan out the house. "Look after your mum please you two..." he said to Emma and Laura who were both still sitting on one of the sofas a little bit lost with everything that was going on. "Ring me if you need anything" and then he left. "Right what the hell are we going to do with ourselves" Chris asked glancing at his watch. "Did Jayne say what time she was going to ring?" "No she just said in a while... for all we know that might not be until midnight" "I don't think I can wait that long... and I need to go home at some point tonight" "You can crash out here if you like... pull out the sofa bed?" "Are you sure? Will the girls mind?" "Chris its not like we're staying even in the same room and this is just a favour... I don't like to think of you going back to your place on your own anyway that's going to be horrid without Jayne" "Thank you Kaz... you're the best friend ever" he leant in and gave her a long heart warming hug patting her back before releasing again. "Thank you" he repeated "I was kind of dreading having to stay in that bed by myself and even just being in the house without her gives me the shivers" "Well you can stay here as long as you like it's really not a problem" Karen offered. "I really don't know what I'd do without you"
Then the pair of them went back into the lounge and sat on the same sofa at opposite ends. "Girls, Chris is going to be staying here for a while until we find out what's going on with Jayne, I hope that's okay with you both" "Yeah that's fine mum" Laura replied not really paying attention as she'd won the fight of who had control of the tv remote, and was flicking through the channels deciding what to watch, eventually opting for E4 because her favourite episode of Friends had just started, The One with Ross's Tan. Emma wasn't so much of a Friends fan herself so she cleared off to her room and sat on her laptop on Twitter and Facebook for ages. "How do you fancy cheese on toast" Karen said getting up rubbing her cold hands together, releasing none of them had had anything to eat virtually all day. "Ooh yes please, would you like me to help" came Chris's reply. "No it's fine you stay there... Laura?" "What?" "Cheese on toast?" "Yeah please" So Karen went out into the hallway on the way to kitchen, pausing at the bottom of the stairs to ask Emma if she wanted any, not getting any reply. As Karen wondered up a couple of stairs slowly she heard loud music drifting out from her daughter's bedroom, she knocked before entering. "Emma did you hear me?" She clearly didn't, her eyes darted from the laptop screen where she was sat in the middle of the room to Karen who was stood in the doorway with one hand around the door and her head just about visible. "Do you want some cheese on toast?" Karen repeated. "No thanks I'm not really hungry" came Emma's reply before she went back to concentrating on the screen. "Are you sure?" Karen was slightly surprised because Emma was the one who ate more normally and was always hungry, she was always snacking on whatever she could find yet she never put on any more weight. "You haven't had anything to eat all day are you feeling okay" "Yes I'm fine" Emma snapped at her mum. "Can you go now please" Karen didn't argue she just left her daughter to it, which was most of the time the much easier option of what to do.
"Chris can you come here a minute" Karen called from the kitchen while she stood on her tip toes to reach the bread out the cupboard. "Yep sure" he leapt up from the seat and scidaddled into the kitchen at the call of his name. "You called?" "Yeah...Emma's not right... she doesn't want any food and she's normally the one that's always eating... she's been acting a bit weird ever since I said you were staying and now I'm worried she thinks there's something going on between us" Karen said getting the cheese from the fridge and frantically trying to get the new packet open but it was just slipping between her fingers, her anger then getting the better of her. "Here let me do that" Chris said taking the packet from her and cutting it with the knife he'd just grabbed from the side. "and I'm sure she doesn't think that... it's probably something else on her mind, have you tried talking to her?" "Thank you..." Karen replied beginning to cut thin slices of cheese and placing them neatly in a specific pattern on the now half toasted bread that she'd just pulled out from underneath the grill. "I'm still not sure... will you talk to her please? Just reassure her there's nothing between us... then I'll go and see what's wrong myself once we've eaten" "Okay if that will make you happy then that's what I'll do..." so Chris agreed and took the stairs two at a time and knocking on Emma's door.
"Come in" she said turning the music down slightly. She wondered who was going to come in because she'd recognised it wasn't her mother's knock. "Hi Emma, it's only me" "Hey Chris" she said a bit confused as to why he was there, shutting down the lid of her laptop to look directly at him. "Sorry if I'm intruding" "No it's fine" "Your mum said you weren't feeling too good..?" "I've got a bit of a headache that's all, bit tired... just not hungry at the moment I'll probably get myself something in a bit" "Good good... It's just she seems to think you're worried about something... so I've come to tell you that there is honestly nothing going on between me and your mum okay?" he assured her putting his hand on her right shoulder and looking into her eyes. "I know" she said smiling sheepishly. "Okay well I was just... making sure" he smiled at her. "Okay.."
"Karen she's fine I don't know what you were worried about she just told me she's going to get something to eat in a bit" he said as he came down the stairs after having carefully stepped over a pile of books and folders on his way out of Emma's room and shut the door softly behind him, walking down the stairs only to hear the music get louder again, following him down the stairs as he went back into the kitchen to collect his plate of cheese on toast and take a big bite almost burning his mouth in the process of doing so. "I really don't think she thought that at all I just got a bit of a strange look from her when I said it" "Oh well at least now she knows.. will you take this to Laura for me? I'll be out in a minute just getting some drinks for us all"
They stayed up late waiting for a call from Jayne but got nothing and eventually had to give in, Karen went upstairs and pulled out the spare double duvet from the airing cupboard for Chris and a couple of pillows. "are you sure you're gonna be okay down here chris" Karen said concerned about him. "Yeah I'll be fine don't worry about me please, it's nice enough you've let me stay here for a while... thank you again" "really its no problem chris any time you know that" "g'night then kaz..." "night" and without much more chatter Chris arranged the duvet and pillows on the three seater sofa into a comfortable arrangement and took off his trousers pulling the duvet over his body and switching off the light while Karen made her own way up to bed.
Chris barely slept a wink all night, he was constantly checking his phone every 5 minutes in case Jayne miraculously decided to ring him, or even text. At one point he even checked twitter to see if she'd tweeted anything, which of course she hadn't. He was worried sick and had so many unanswered questions that he wondered whether he would ever have the chance to find out the answers. Did she still love him? Was she having an affair? Or was it just something family related? Where was she? Who was she with? Who was the man Karen had seen her with? But the biggest one on his mind that kept coming back was 'Was she okay??'
It got to about 3am before he finally drifted off to sleep but even then he wasn't properly asleep. At one point he thought he might have been dreaming, that Jayne came into the room with a huge smile on her face, she apologised to him in depth and then took him away and they went and got married at the ice rink in secret in the darkness of the early hours. Then she took him home again and they stayed there, not letting anyone know they were back, just enjoying each other's company and presence with passion and intensity, wondering hands and soft, sweet, sensuous kisses.
He was suddenly jolted awake by Emma creeping down the stairs but misplacing her foot on the second but last step, resulting in her taking a tumble into the pitch black space in front of her, making a huge bang on the way down, and she let out a high pitched squeal as she knocked her head on the edge of the banister. Chris's eyes snapped open and he tiredly rubbed them before going to investigate what all the noise was, his heart racing and thumping against his chest. "Karen? Is that you?" he whispered into the darkness, being incredibly cautious about what could have been in front of him. "Chris? It's me, Emma, I just fell down the stairs... could you put the light on a sec please" came a quiet struggled voice at Chris's feet as she sat there with one had on her head checking for what could potentially be blood, and the other clutching her ankle which pains were shooting through.
Chris's left hand fumbled around on the wall of the fairly narrow hallway behind him to try and find the light switch, eventually his fingers came across it and he flicked it on, then shielding his eyes from the alarming sudden brightness. "Are you okay?" he said crouching down next to Emma who was trying very hard now not to cry in front of him. She slowly took her hand away from where it was pressed onto her head revealing a spot of blood on her fingers. "You're bleeding" Chris told her stating the obvious taking hold of her hand. "Come in the kitchen I'll get you some ice and get that cleaned up" Chris said talking very expertly. "Hang on let me get some trousers on sorry about that" he said suddenly realising he was just standing there in front of a 16 year old girl in his boxers. He returned quickly having pulled on his trousers in a frantic mess. "I can't move Chris... it's my ankle" she said. "Come here then let me help you" he said gently pulling her up by the arm and putting one arm around her as she hobbled into the kitchen and sat on the chair after Chris had turned the light on.
"What happened anyway" "I just came down here to get a glass of water my foot missed the step because I couldn't see properly and then I couldn't see what I was doing and whacked my head on the corner..." Emma explained letting a tear escape and run down her face, which she quickly tried to wipe away before Chris saw. "Right where does your mum keep the medical stuff" he asked searching around. "On top of the cupboard over there in the corner" Emma pointed. "Right this should help the pain a bit..." Chris said letting the tap run a bit before wetting a bit of cotton wool with freezing cold water and passing it to Emma. "Press that against your head, it will stop the swelling" he advised. "And your ankle..." "I think there's a bag of frozen peas mum used to use on her bad knee in the freezer" Emma replied weakly. "Here you go" Chris said eventually finding it and propping Emma's foot up on the chair opposite having a good look at it first.
"I think I'm gonna be sick" Emma said quickly putting her spare hand against her mouth. Chris quickly just gave her the nearest thing he could which happened to be the washing up bowl just in the nick of time. "I'll go and get your mum try not to move" Chris said giving in on trying to deal with it by himself, he was also trying not to disturb Karen because she was just as tired as he was. "Karen... it's me... Can I come in..." he said softly knocking on her closed bedroom door before entering, slowly tip toeing over to the bed and shaking her shoulder gently. "hmmm??" she mumbled, not opening her eyes. "Emma's fallen down the stairs... she needs you I think" Chris explained to her in a soft voice. "She's what..." Karen said opening her eyes and rubbing them, slowly sitting up. "She went to go and get a glass of water and fell, fright the bloody life out of me that's one thing..." Chris explained, trying to hurry Karen who was trying to find her dressing gown. Eventually she did quickly wrapping it around her body and following Chris down the stairs.
"Emma baby what have you done..." she said seeing her daughter in the middle of the kitchen with one foot propped up on a chair with a bag of frozen peas, one hand clutched against her head which now had a small trickle of blood pouring from it and the other was trying to steady the now 'sick bowl' which was on her lap, and she had gone extremely pale in colour. It was not a sight to be seen every day at 3:30am.
"Emma..." Karen sighed going to hug her daughter, only causing her more pain and a new set of tears ran down her face. "Thank you so much Chris for looking after her" Karen said blushing slightly. "Let me have a look at your ankle darling" Karen said releasing the cuddle and lifting the bag of freezing cold peas off her foot. It had now doubled, possibly tripled inside and was already starting to turn a nice purpley colour. "Oh my god Emma that is huge!" Karen said, a slight look of horror swept over her face as she looked at her daughter's strangely coloured massively swollen ankle and compared it with her other skinny one. "It hurts so much" Emma said still crying as Karen gently felt around where the injury was. "It definitely doesn't look good baby, I think we need to be up A&E with that" "What now... at this time" "Well yes it's obviously very painful I can see it in your face you're in agony baby, the sooner you get that x-rayed the better" Karen admitted, putting the peas back and pulling out a chair to comfort Emma, wiping the tears that were still falling down her now patchy and streaky face. "What are we going to do with you eh" she said hugging her again. "Do you want me to ring an ambulance" Chris offered who was now awkwardly standing in the corner of the room. "Yes please Chris if you wouldn't mind, thank you so much again" "It's no problem honestly, see it is quite handy I'm here really isn't it" he chuckled, going to get his phone from the other room and dialling 999.
"Don't move baby I'm just going to go and wake your sister, she sleeps through anything that child" Karen said kissing the top of Emma's head and going up the stairs into Laura's room, entering without knocking because there was just no point. "Laura...Laura wake up baby" Karen whispered into her sleeping daughter's ear, pulling the covers gently away from her. "What..." she mumbled turning over so she was facing away from Karen. "What do you want it's too early" she groaned. "I know its only 4am...sorry... wake up though I need to talk to you, we've got to go up the hospital with Emma the ambulance is on the way as we speak" Karen eventually said giving in with breaking the news gently and just coming out with it in fear that she'd never actually wake up. This woke her up and she suddenly rolled over and opened her eyes slowly registering the information. "The hospital? Why? What's happened?" "No sshhh calm down baby..." Karen started putting her cold hand on Laura's shoulder. "She fell down the stairs and knocked her head and her ankle and it's killing her with sickness too so it's better we get her up there now sooner rather than later... now you can stay here if you want I mean you're old enough it's not like your a little kid anymore is it... but you needed to know either way, you can come if you want to" Karen said giving her the free option. Laura thought about it for a few seconds considering both options before finally deciding. "No I think I'll come it'll worry me sick staying here by myself, and I won't be able to sleep now anyway now I'm awake. I know I'm not a little kid anymore but it still freaks me out being home alone sometimes and especially at this time of night, morning, whatever it is" Laura went on slowly sitting up in her bed rubbing her tired slightly puffy eyes and tying her hair back into a ponytail which was long enough it came half way down her back.
"Okay baby no that's fine I said it's fine either way whatever you want and if you want to come then you can" Karen said getting up from the bed. "Get yourself some clothes on then meet me downstairs okay, be quick though no time for make up" Karen laughed and then went into her own bedroom quickly pulling out some clothes that didn't even match, just the first things she could find and then headed back downstairs to Chris and Emma, Chris had just hung up the phone and ambulance was expected to take about 10 to 15 minutes to get to them from the nearest hospital. Emma was throwing up again from the pain and Chris was doing his best to comfort her while Karen wasn't there and he was doing a grand job considering he had just been put majorly on the spot. "Oh baby..." Karen said getting a new bit of cotton wool with water on it and wiping the last of the blood that had started to dry up as a scab on her head but it was no longer bleeding which was a good sign. "Laura's coming with us too she doesn't fancy staying here by herself" "I don't blame her" Chris said.
"That was bloody quick I thought we'd be dragging you out the house" Karen said as Laura emerged in the doorway in a blue matching tracksuit and she hadn't bothered with any make up much to Karen's surprise. "Hey" Laura said getting herself a glass of water to try and wake herself up a bit. "I think that's the ambulance here" Chris said as he walked out into the hallway and peering out the door to sure enough find flashing sirens parking up on the driveway. "Right let's go... me and Chris will be you crutches how's that... Laura will you open the door please" "yep" so while Laura went and answered the door two paramedics came rushing in and Karen and Chris helped Laura out the chair carefully and slowly so that she wasn't sick again which luckily she wasn't, and they all helped her hobble to the ambulance she made a pretty good job of hopping on the uninjured foot she didn't really need the stretcher.
"Just take some of these for now it will numb the pain a bit more and make you feel a bit less nauseous" the paramedic instructed her handed her two tablets and a glass of pure cold water. He was a tall man in a tight fitting green polo shirt with matching trousers and his name was Jack. "Thanks" Emma replied weakly. Karen was sat in the seat directly next to her with Laura and Chris sitting close by. "It won't take us long to get you there, we'll get you straight in x ray and see if you've broken or fractured anything, that certainly looks like a nasty one" he said taking her ankle in his hand which was still throbbing and had swollen even more than before.
Getting a bit tired now so will leave it there for now and probably update tomorrow morning, do you still like it?
It didn't take them long to have arrived at the hospital straight through A&E and Emma was x-rayed within 20 minutes of their arrival, while Karen, Chris and Laura waited impatiently for her in the waiting area, which was relatively empty for 4 in the morning, there weren't many casualties at that time. "Okay the good news is she hasn't broken anything," the lady came out helping Emma along back to Karen. "but the ankle is severely fractured and could take up to 7 weeks to heal properly, so she's going to have to take it incredibly easy until then," she explained as Emma slowly lowered herself back down on the seat next to her mum, and propped her injured leg up across a few of the seats next to her. "If you wait there we'll get you in as soon as possible to have it strapped up, you shouldn't be waiting for any more than 10 minutes."
"Well at least you've not broken it," Karen said stroking Emma's head gently to comfort her, tears were still running down her face purely from the pain that her foot was causing her. "I may as well have done, it bloody kills" she moaned, and then she let her head drop so she was resting on Karen's shoulder. "Thank you so much Chris" Karen whispered into his ear when Emma had kind of gone into a daze. "You're very welcome, really it's no problem at all" "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been here really I don't" and then Chris took hold of Karen's other hand and held it tight, giving her a warm smile.
"Emma Pickavance?" the nurse came out into the waiting room looking around the room for Emma. "Here" she replied, leaning heavily on Karen so she could stand up. Karen went with her into the room and it sat next to Emma while she had a plaster cast put on, just her perfectly painted toe nails could be seen out the bottom and it went all the way up to her knee, and an appointment was made then and there for 4 weeks time when she would have to come and have it taken off. "Right here's a leaflet about what to do and some tablets for the pain, if you experience any discomfort and extreme pain then you can ring that number and we'll see what we can do, take care" Karen took the leaflet that the woman was thrusting at her and took the crutches that were also being shoved in her face, she passed them to Emma who slowly got herself up and limped out of the room with Karen closely following behind her. When they went back out Chris was just staring into space thinking about everything, and Laura was virtually asleep, her head was resting on the wall behind her in the seat next to Chris.
"Right let's get home then... what an eventful morning" Karen said as they approached the others and they all got out and left, Chris held the car door open for Emma to get in the front just because it was so much easier for her to get in there, and Karen and Laura sat in the back. "I'm really not tired any more" Karen said as she walked through the front door. "I am, I'm going back to bed, I should have stayed here I think" Laura said glumy, moodily making her way back upstairs to shut herself in her room and collapse on her bed, she didn't even bother to change back into her pyjamas. "Mum will you help me upstairs please" Emma said, leaning against the wall while she struggled to maintain her balance to put her coat away again. "Of course baby... night again Chris" she said before escorting Emma up the stairs, and heading back to her own bed, changing back into her silky night gown and climbing into the now cold bed. Chris was now wide awake as he made his way back to the lounge, shutting the door and settling himself down on the sofa with all the blankets.
A little while later he heard footsteps coming down the stairs, little footsteps that were trying not to be heard, Karen sneaked pass the lounge and into the kitchen to get herself some water, but she was so wide awake now she just pulled out a chair and sat, thinking. She was thinking about Emma and worrying about her injury, then she thought about Jayne, and once she did that the thoughts never stopped whizzing around, they still had no answers even after Jayne's promise to explain everything. What Karen didn't know was that Chris was listening hard, waiting for her to go back upstairs, eventually realising she hadn't, so he made his way to the kitchen, not at all surprised to see her sat there, though it was the opposite for Karen when she saw Chris come in, she nearly jumped out of her skin because she was in such a deep thought she wasn't aware of the sound of his footsteps at all.
"Karen what are you doing, are you okay?" he said getting some water himself and then pulling out a chair next to him. "Yeah I suppose... can't sleep" "no neither can I.." he said, his hands wrapped around the mug that was filled right to the top with cold, refreshing water. "Eventful day?" "You could say that... it's all happened so quickly, and this morning when I was getting all ready to leave, it just seems like about a year ago" he said thinking back to when he was sat in his own home waiting to see Jayne in her beautiful dress, waiting for her to say 'I do' and waiting for that first kiss as a married couple. "So what were you thinking about?" he said looking up from the bottom of the cup, and into Karen's eye. "Oh nothing much... well everything. Emma, Jayne, Jayne, Emma, Jayne... y'know? I'm still petrified Chris, why haven't we heard from Jayne? Where the hell is she? What the hell is she doing? And then I was thinking about Laura..." "I think we both need some sleep... but we're not going to get it until we hear from Jayne are we? She has no idea what she's doing to us... I just really hope she's okay, that's the main thing"
In the end neither of them did go to sleep again, they just sat up until the morning, they moved into the lounge and sat at opposite ends of the sofa with the blankets and duvet pulled over them, watching tv and chatting, making general conversation like they would any other time they were together. But by 6pm that evening, they still hadn't heard from Jayne, and both of them were still petrified. Chris had drove back to his in hope of the slight possibility that Jayne might be there, but she wasn't. So then Karen offered he could stay at hers as long as he wanted until he felt comfortable, so he got himself a few basics and some clothes and came back over. It would be better if they were both in the same place anyway, just in case Jayne did ring one of them. Another 24 hours passed, and still they heard nothing.
