I do not own any rights to Chris or Jayne all events in this story are pure fiction and I mean no harm or offence by what I have written here it is all purely my own creation but I will say this if any of it represents real life then it is pure coincedence and I mean no harm or offence by this, I am giving this story a 15 rating and I strongly advise people below this age not to read this if it upsets or offends you in any way.

Chris stood in the waiting room at Kings Cross station in London waiting for the train that would take him north and home to Jayne who he had not see in over twelve long months having been away serving in Afghanistan Chris had decided that he needed to serve his country to give something back in return for all the support that he had recieved when he and Jayne had ended their skating partnership due to injury he had decided one night that he was going to join the army and nothing Jayne had said or done had changed his mind except for one thing and that was the day that they had been married he glanced down at his left hand where his silver wedding ring proudly sat and thought of how excited Jayne was going to be when she saw him she had no idea that he was coming home none at all niether did his son Hayden who at nearly two was the spitting image of Chris in every way and loved his daddy very much and had been missing him whilst he had been gone.

Hearing that his train was now pulling into platform one Chris made his way to the barrier and through onto the cold concrete on the other side the train was covered in a light dusting of snow making it look like it had been covered in a layer of icing sugar Chris walked down to the furthest end of the train and climbed aboard stowing his holdall into the over head rack and his day kitbag onto the seat beside him he settled down for his journey north he looked up as someone entered his carriage and smiled at them, "Nicky mate how are you?" he called and the young man looked up studying the solider sitting across from him "Deano Oh My God how are you?" Nicky asked getting up and settling into the seat opposite Chris "Tired and very dusty but good heading home to my family" Chris said in response and Nicky nodded "Yeah Karen told me you had joined the army how was it out there?" he asked and Chris unzipped the front pocket of his kitbag and dug around coming up with a plastic wallet full of photographs as a medic he had been dealing with not only ISAF forces victims but also some of the locals who had been caught in the crossfire he had some snaps of a little girl who he had had medi vaced back to the UK because she had no family left to speak of and he was hoping that Jayne would agree to adopting little Angel as he had become rather attached to her Angel had suffered numerous injuries in the bomb blast that had killed her parents and older brother Tomlin who had been trying to rescue her from the wreckage that had once been their home.

"That little girl is just amazing I couldn't have got through the last months of my tour without her she made me smile so much and yet she's lost so much but gained something too" He said showing Nicky one of the pictures of him holding little three year old Angel in his arms as if she where something as precious as Hayden who he hoped would be thrilled to eventually have a older sister.

Nicky was in tears by the time Chris finished telling him about all that he had seen out there on the battlefiled when the food trolley made its way into their carriage Nicky treated Chris to a cup of coffee and a chocolate chip muffin Chris munched on it happily it was the first thing he had had to eat that day since leaving his hotel in London to begin the trip north.

When they eventually arrived in Nottingham train station Chris pulled out his phone once he was off the train and called Jayne at home "Hello Darling" he said when she answered and Jayne squealed with delight at hearing his voice again.

"Chris were are you it's very noisy I can barely hear you?" Jayne asked and Chris s******ed "Oh just some busy market town near to base" He lied hoping Jayne wouldn't see straight through the little white lie he made his way out to the front of the station and hailed a taxi then hung up leaving Jayne talking to a empty phone line he asked the driver to take him to the Jury inn on the high street where he knew Jayne still worked as a member of the bar staff when they arrived he hurriedly paid the driver and carried his bags into the warm red brick building he entered the public bar and dumping his bags into one of the empty seats made his way up to the bar and waited patiently to be served the look on Jayne's face was priceless when she turned to serve him and she screamed "What are you doing here your not due home yet" she said and Chris rolled his eyes "Come here" he said and pulled her out from behind the bar and gave her a passionate kiss in front of the rest of the punters in the pub.

Pulling back Jayne stroked her hand across the light stubble on Chris's chin and just kissed him again not quite believing he was home safe and in one piece at long last he had made it home for RandR once but he had been ill at the time and she hadn't really got to see him properly not like now looking all rugged and handsome in his uniform.

"Can I have a pint of bitter?" Chris asked digging around in his trouser pocket for some of his loose change and passing some to her Jayne nodded and pulled a pint of his favorite Newcastle Brown Ale Chris sipped it when she passed it to him and savored the taste he had missed being able to have a good pint they sold beer on the base but it was only a small percentage and tasted like a watered down version of the real thing.

Jayne also went through into the kitchen and ordered two plates of cheesy chips knowing Chris probably hadn't eaten since before he departed from the overnight stopover in Cyprus and she was right he ate as though it was the first hot meal he had had that was decent in a long time then he told her all about Angel.

Chris was in floods of tears by the time he had finished telling Jayne all about Angel and he swallowed thickly as her arms wrapped themselves around him and held him tight against her "Hey it's going to be alright we will take her in for sure she deserves another chance to be happy again after all she has been through in her short life loosing her parents and her brother like she did I couldn't let her go into the system not after all that" Jayne said and Chris pulled back "Are you serious?" he asked and Jayne nodded "Completely serious" she said and Chris hugged her tight again "I'd better get home then on up to the hospital Angel should be there by now she was on the flight following mine the RAF flew her back here" he said and Jayne nodded and he got to his feet and picking up his bags made his way to the door "See you at home" he said and left giving his beloved wife one more wave and was gone.

Chris took himself home had a shower and a shave and smiled at the heat of the water as it cascaded over him he had forgotten what it was like to be washing in water that wasn't already full of dust and felt nothing but relief as the weeks and months worth of dust and grime fell away and he became clean again after his shower he dressed in a pair of green combats and his camoflage shirt with his badge and rank on it and his surname and put on his black regimental issue boots with black cotton socks underneath them every turn up and tuck was exactly as it was meant to be and he combed his hair into its normal floppy slightly boyish style and headed out to the hospital when he arrived he felt nervous about seeing Angel again even though it hadn't been all that long since he had last seen her.

He approached the children's ward and spoke with the ward sister who pointed to a bed in one of the quieter corners of the busy buzzing ward and he saw Angel still sleeping there he made his way over and sat down in one of the squashy chairs beside her and reached out to stroke her short dark brown hair she opened her eyes at his touch and smiled at him with that same toothy grin she had given him seventeen hours ago when he had told her they would be heading home to England.

"Captain Dean good afternoon sir" the doctor said as he approached and Chris stood up to shake his hand "I see she's awake now that's good" he said indicating Angel and Chris nodded "Yes it is I was wondering if I could discuss something with you about young Angel" he asked and the doctor nodded and Chris explained about his plan to adopt Angel when she was well enough to leave hospital.

Three months later it was the day that Angel was due to come home and Jayne had planned a welcome to the family party for her she and Chris had finished painting her room the previous week it was purple with glitter and unicorns and a mural of horses on one wall around her bed it had been designed by Hayden as his gift to welcome her into the family as his adopted sister.

Chris carried Angel out to his car and drove her home when they pulled up Angel was excited to see everyone and squealed with delight when she saw her older brother standing with his arms out to her and ran up to him he wrapped her into a good hug.
