Some of you may recognise this from the TND fanfic forum... Another short one :)

A couple of months later, it was the day before Karen’s 50th birthday, June 20th. Chris has a surprise for Karen. She has been working all day but Chris came home early, much to Karen’s disappointment. He got home, cooked a lovely meal for the pair of them, that was steaming on the dining room table. The lights were dimmed, and he had made a very special play list of all Karen’s favourite songs. The French doors were opened out onto the small balcony, which had a beautiful countryside view; they often went out there while the sun was setting, watching all the beautiful colours in the sky above them. Karen missed her alcohol, especially a glass of wine with her dinner, however she was slowly adapting to the thought of it. For the special occasion, Chris had done some research and made a pregnancy-proof ****tail for Karen, it smelt wonderful. When everything was all set Chris quickly freshened up and went out to the balcony to wait for Karen. He had butterflies in his stomach, but he knew deep down it was the right decision.
As soon as he heard the key in the door, he rushed to greet Karen at the door, and dragged her outside. She hesitates a little as she wanted to just go and have a shower and put her pyjamas on, but Chris wouldn't let her, he lead her eagerly out onto the balcony. She was overwhelmed just at the sight of all the effort Chris had made and her eyes filled up with tears as soon as she saw it, but she would never have guessed what was about to happen.
Chris got down onto one knee, and whipped out the most beautiful, mesmerising, exquisite diamond ring. It was incredibly simple, yet sublime. Karen was already in tears before Chris had even opened his mouth. He stared straight into her bright sparkling eyes, and took her warm hand in his.
‘Karen, where do I start? You have always been in my life, yet never have I felt the same about you in all the 30 years I’ve known you. You are the love of my life, and no one could ever replace the role you play in my life. I have waited a long time for this moment and now it has come. You have always believed in me, and helped me become a better person. Karen Barber, I love you so much that no one could ever love you more… will you marry me?’
By this point both of them are in tears of joy and happiness, the perfect landscape of sun setting behind them.
Through her tears Karen manages to get out, ‘Chris, I don’t know what to say. This is the best birthday present I could ever ask for! Ever since I met you I knew I wanted to spend my life with you. I have changed so much since we came together, and you have supported me through all I have been through. Christopher Dean, I will marry you!’
Neither of them have ever been happier, and right then they were convincingly the happiest beings on the planet. Their lives were now complete, a perfect match made in heaven. Karen’s cheeks are damp with tears and Chris now had tears in his eyes. They forgot about dinner, and went up to the bedroom…
Karen was now five months into her pregnancy, and the happiest woman on Earth. The morning of her birthday was exceedingly special. Chris woke early, and let Karen lay in. He lay next to her watching her sleep, dream, breathe. For Chris it was mesmerising. He soon got up and quietly snuck downstairs to cook Karen breakfast; she woke up to the smell wafting upstairs. It smelt wonderful, and she couldn’t wait to see her new fiancé. As Karen ate Chris watched her every mouthful, sometimes feeding her the food as if she was just a child.
They both just lay and stared at each other for what seemed like a lifetime, occasionally giggling, and the baby was kicking, obviously knowing what was going on, and reminding Karen and Chris how lucky they were. Before they left the house they took a moment to take in all the happenings of recent times, everything had happened so quickly. They posed in front of the mirror, their hands placed under Karen’s perfectly formed baby bump.
