"Chris I have something to ask you... Well tell you actually," Karen said cheekily.
"What is it now?"
"Well you no my niece…"
"Yes what about her?"
"Well I said that we'd do some babysitting, what do you think?"
“Ok, when were you thinking?
"I kind of already told her tonight."
“But we were going to go out and I had planned something special for us tonight."
"Well we can go another night, I promised we would look after her a few weeks ago and forgot until she reminded me yesterday."
"But..." Chris wasn’t convinced he didn’t like the sound of spending the evening looking after a baby, he had his mind fixed on other things and he had plans he wanted to go through with.
“Chris…" Karen gave him a stern look.
"Ok, whatever, just for you…"
"C’mon it'll be fun - she's so cute! I'm really excited about this Chris!"
"What time is she being dropped off, so I can leave the house before?" Chris said seriously.
"No, no you’re staying right here, you’re helping me, we're going to do this together."
"Well thanks for roping me into this!"
"Oh come on, have some excitement in you! Stop being so dull, it won't be that bad - honest I swear."
"We can watch a movie at the same time if you want and we only have her until 9:30 then we can have our own time!"
"You win then I suppose…"
"Yes thank you so much Chris, I really want to do this,” Karen was getting rather excited.
“Ok Mel's bringing Molly over at half 6, so we need to tidy up a bit and make sure nothing is lying around okay?"
"Ok what do you want me to do babe?"
"You can start baby-proofing the hose… look for anything that can be put away would you? Thanks honey."
"Ok whatever you say babe... whatever you say." Chris wasn’t very enthusiastic at this point he was only agreeing to it all so Karen didn’t get upset.
An hour later and they had finished tidying up, "I think I deserve a kiss babe... I’ve done the hovering, washed up, dusted and moved the furniture around for you."
"Well come here then!"
“Why don't you come here instead…"
Karen walked over to Chris wrapped her arms around him and kissed him until they heard the doorbell go off, at this they finished the kiss and acted as if nothing had happened when they opened the door… Karen took molly out of her sisters arms and hugged her tightly she was so excited and hadn’t seen her in a while.
"Hello gorgeous, you're getting big now aren’t you ...." Karen was talking away to baby molly as if she was going to answer back and Chris just stood there and looked at her strangely wondering why the hell she was having a full blown conversation with a baby…
"What the bloody hell are you doing Karen? She’s not even 6 months old and your having a full on conversation with her! poor child…”
"Oh Chris you don't understand do you?"
"No I don't…” he turned to Mel, “Anyway nice to see you again."
"And you!"
Meanwhile Karen was still chatting away to Molly, who looked like she was about to drop off to sleep at any moment.
"Aw bless she's so tired, and she's never been baby sat before... She might need feeding in a while but then she should just drop off."
"Ok Mel do you want to come in for a coffee or do you have to go?"
"I’ll be off but we'll have to meet up some time soon definitely, and I’ll be back in a few hours to get Molly."
An hour later Karen was still sitting with Molly and still talking away and Chris was getting bored he had not even touched the baby, "Karen will you put the baby down- she's not a toy!"
"No but she is so cute, look at her bless…"
"I wouldn’t know I’ve barely seen her, you’re hogging her, you haven’t even let me hold her, now if you're going to drag me into this babysitting lark at least me have a hold please!"
At that moment Molly started crying and Karen worked out from her motherly experience that she was hungry… "Here you go then you can feed her."
"Pass her here then!"
Karen didn't expect Chris to be so good at holding and feeding little Molly as she was so small and it had been a while since he had fed either of his sons, they were all grown up now, but he knew exactly what he was doing -he was a natural and molly looked up at him with her big brown eyes as she guzzled the milk, “Chris I didn't realise your secret baby talents?"
"There's a lot you don't know about me!"
After the bottle was gone Chris handed Molly back to burp her as he didn't like that bit…
"Oh I see, you don’t like this bit then, no?"
"We're sharing the job aren't we?" Chris replied cheekily.
"Whatever…"
Karen was walking up and down the room with Molly half over her shoulder, rubbing her back talking away to her, Molly seemed to love it.
They sat down and watched a movie while Molly was settling down they were both snuggled up in Chris and looked like a proper family, Karen loved it she didn’t want to give Molly back; she had lots of things going through her mind… Chris started stroking top of Karen’s head she looked up innocently.
"See this isn’t that bad is it ? Do we have to give her back?”
"It has been quite nice yes it has... But don't be getting any ideas!"
"Aww Chris!"
"What?"
"Can we have one?"
Chris gave nothing but silence back to that question, he didn’t like the idea of having a baby just yet, he wasn’t ready and it really wouldn’t be a good idea with work and everything else.
"Pretty please?"
"No Karen just no - we're looking after this one that's quite enough!"
"But why?"
"It’s too much hassle and what are we going to do when we have work?"
"We'll work something out?"
"No I don't think we will actually cos we're not having one!"
"Don't start yelling because you'll wake her…"
"Well just accept it then!"
"But you're such a natural with Molly, please?"
"No now be quiet while we watch this please…"
Karen got up and stormed out the room in a mood leaving molly in Chris’s arms...
"Oh what shall we do with her eh?" he whispered to molly and she shifted in her sleep and tightened her little hands as if she understood every word, but Chris still didn't get why women talked to babies so much but he did have a nice little cuddle with Molly and it was lovely - he was maybe starting to change his mind but it was definitely going to take a lot of convincing on Karen’s part.
It wasn’t long until Mel came to pick Molly up, Karen was still upstairs in a mood…
"How’s she been?"
"Brilliant you even know she was here, she‘s been a little angel!"
"Where's Karen?" Mel noticed she wasn’t there at the door and thought she would have wanted to at least say hello.
"Oh she's upstairs in a mood, I think she got a bit too attached to Molly and started getting rather moody let‘s put it that way…"
"Oh dear... so my little Molly might have a cousin on the way then?" Mel said joking around.
"Erm no, I don’t think so!"
"Oh…" and they both laughed.
"Karen they're going now!" Chris shouted up the stairs, he thought she might want to say goodbye but Karen just ignored him.
"Bye!" Mel said cheerfully, "Chat with you soon Karen, we‘ll get together some time in the week yeah?" she shouted up the stairs, but there was no reply.
"She was like this when we were little…“
“Nothing’s changed then?“
“Ok I’ll leave you to sort her out... Bye, nice to see you!"
“Bye Mel!” and he watched her drive off with little Molly fast asleep. When they had driven out of sight Chris went up to see Karen, she was lying on the bed watching TV
"What’s the matter with you Karen? That was so rude you never even came to see her off."
"I want a baby... please can we try for a baby please? We will be a proper family then!"
"We already are honey."
"No we're not... we are not married yet and both have children from previous marriages and they are getting older now, they have their own lives. I want it to be me you married and a baby please!!!"
Chris just walked off back down stairs and continued watching the film, Karen stayed upstairs just thinking of their future for about half hour, what it would be like with a baby and getting married, and all sorts. She decided to get ready for bed but she wasn’t planning on going to sleep just yet though, oh no she had other plans, she put on a really skimpy, silky nigthy, with her silky dressing gown to match, moisturised her legs, re did her hair and make up and put some really nice perfume on… Karen made a lot of effort hoping to change Chris’s mind, she then went down stairs and stood in front of Chris...
“Karen its not going to work at least not tonight, okay?"
"Oh but why?"
"I don't think you're thinking about what a baby will do, and how it will change our relationship - its a very stressful time and especially with work, can't you at least wait a few months, and that's at least I'm not agreeing to this one bit do you hear me?"
"You are, you want one too you know you do you just don't want to admit it!"
"No I don't, we're not having one that's the end of that."
"Why did you just say that then?"
"Just be quiet c’mon, get into bed stop getting ideas in your head!"
"But Chris I want a baby!"
"Well tough luck because we're not having one!"
"But why?"
"Because we are not now end of, now go to bed."
"When you coming up?"
"I’ll come up once this is finished."
"How long will that be?"
"I don’t know will you stop asking all these questions!"
Karen was quite tired after looking after the baby so she got into bed but as soon as she tried to sleep she couldn’t so she just lay there waiting for Chris to come up, which he did 2 hours later.
"Karen what are you doing still awake you must be tired?"
"I am but I can't sleep I have babies on my mind!"
"I see.... You realise you're not going to change my mind?"
"Well I'm not giving In for one thing!"
Chris turned the light off and got in bed, Karen cuddled up really closely to Chris practically lying on him but she didn’t say anything, hoping he would get more in the mood and change his mind.
"That’s not going to work so go to sleep."
"What??" she asked innocently.
"You know what, now go to sleep."
Karen got all moody and moved away over her side letting out a really loud sigh, she rolled over to face away from Chris and just lay there with her eyes open. She couldn't sleep but when she looked round Chris was fast asleep himself and was starting to snore, so Karen let out another loud sigh... How was she going to convince him? She had to find a way and quickly, and she didn't think it was something she could ask Jayne about either this time.
She finally fell asleep and morning soon came, Chris woke as usual before Karen he leant over and wrapped his arms around her, she woke from this but didn’t look at him and just pushed him away; tears started to fall down her face.
"Don’t get in a mood with me just because you cant have what you want!" she didn’t reply.
"Come on get up we have to be at the rink soon."
"I had a dream I was pregnant..." She said trying to get onto the subject again.
"Well that's lovely isn't it cos its not going to happen in real life telling you now."
"Chris stop being so negative it would be so great to have something like this in our lives, c’mon you loved looking after Molly and don't you deny it... Plus your a clear natural."
"You're not thinking straight though dear."
"Oh I am - do you know how long I've been thinking about this Chris? No you don't!"
"You only decided after we looked after Molly!"
"Totally not true I've had babies on my mind pretty much ever since we got together Chris this is what I wanted from the start and looking after Molly really just showed me we could do it…"
"So why haven’t you said anything about a baby before then eh?"
"Because..."
"Because what? Unless you can give me a good answer then I don’t want to hear anything more about a baby!" Karen didn’t answer and Chris walked off she started crying again ...
She had a good reason but knew Chris wouldn't understand, she had always wanted a perfect little family where everything was ok and happy and Stephen hadn't given her that, he never really made her happy, but now she was with Chris it was the happiest time of her life and it seemed perfect. She wanted him to give her what she wanted - a baby - she knew they would make a perfect family.
“KAREN HURRY UP its time to leave now babe!" Karen stormed down the stairs giving him a very stern look.
"Don’t call me babe!"
"Do I get a kiss this morning?" Karen just walked out to the car and left Chris to get their stuff.
"Oh we are grumpy this morning aren’t we?"
“Don't talk to me like that please? You're the only reason I'm grumpy so don't you go complaining!"
"How is this my fault? You can't do this Karen!"
"Why won't you have a baby with me, don't you love me?" Karen made her eyes big and wide and they shined in the light as she looked Chris right in the eye. "Bribery is not going to get you anywhere!" a tear rolled down her cheek as she thought about the perfect family image.
"Karen honey of course I love you, know I do, I just don't get why you want this baby so much!"
"I just want a baby, what is so wrong with that? The girls have grown up and live their own lives now I just want a baby…"
"Karen save the tears babe... you are not going to change my mind."
"But why?" they got to the rink and Karen was still in tears.
"Pull yourself together woman we are going into the rink now honey.”
"Chris just say you’ll think about it please? For me?"
"Yeah I already have we are not having one…" he muttered.
They walked into the rink in silence and Jayne saw them and rushed over, "Karen whatever’s the matter?"
Chris gave Karen a stern look, as if to say don’t even think about telling her about this. "Oh nothing I'm just not feeling too good I’ll tell you later."
"Ok, as long as your okay honey. What are we doing today?"
"Up to Chris I suppose…"
"Jayne do you want to go through our routine?" He only said this so Karen could go off and do her own thing because he wanted some time away from her for a bit… Jayne and Chris walked over to the rink as they did Karen just stood there and said in a voice only Chris would be able to hear, "Chris please just think about it ... I’m begging you,"
"Well it is actually," Karen said under her breath, Chris just gave a very stern look back at her that whole morning.
Jayne could tell that something had happened as Karen just stood at the side of the rink not saying much in a right mood and they didn’t make any contact with each other.
Jayne was bursting to find out what was going on and it looked like Chris had no intentions of telling her so she found a quiet moment to go up to Karen and find out what all the commotion was about, “Karen whatever is going on, you're both clearly hiding something and acting a little strangely today.”
"Oh its nothing..."
"No c’mon tell me I won't tell Chris you told me, promise."
"Ok ok... Its just... We looked after little molly last night and it really made my mind up about the whole baby thing, I've been thinking about it ages but that was really the final decision for me…"
"What are you going on about?"
"I'm sure I've talked to you about babies before?"
"No not recently you haven't."
"Oh... Well I better start from the beginning then..." Karen explained to Jayne everything why she wanted a baby, the timing just seemed right, her and Chris were in the right place at the right time and she was sure it was going to be right, Jayne was almost touched by Karen’s words.
"Oh Karen..."
"I don't know what to do tho because Chris is so fixed on not having anymore children!"
"Well maybe he does have a point... What are his reasons?"
"Well he said stuff about work..."
"Hmmm…"
"Hey who's side are you on?"
"You know I hate to pick sides, especially between you too..."
"What can i do to persuade him?"
"To be honest Karen i think it is going to take a lot to persuade him."
"I know ... i just want a baby ... i want a family!"
"You have a family though!"
"But not a proper perfect one ... we are not married yet and don’t have a child how’s that a family?"
"Yeah its not like you don’t have children."
“Yes but they are grown up now living their life’s now and i want a baby with Chris ... i love him."
“Aww Karen…"
"He wont even say he will think about it ... will you talk to him please?"
"Well its not really my place to speak is it really ... it is something that you need to talk about together."
"Please? For me?"
"As it’s you…i will try but cant promise anything."
Jayne felt a little uncomfortable about talking to Chris about his and Karen’s relationship, it was awkward and she was def right when she said it wasn't her place to speak what was she supposed to say to him, how was she supposed to ask him if he would have a baby with her best friend, it was an incredibly uncomfortable position to be in but she had promised Karen she would do it so she approached him, "Chris, Karen’s really upset."
"Is this about the bloody baby again cos I'm sick of her going on about it she won't shut up!"
"Oh... She's spoken to you then?"
"Yes she bloody has and now she's getting you to try well let me tell you its not going to work."
"Why are you so firmly saying no maybe u should give it a go?"
"Jayne this isn't something you can 'give a go' you do it you do it u can't change It!"
"Karen loves you and wants you to be a proper family and i don’t think what ever you say will change her mind."
"Yes and there’s nothing that will change my mind so tell her to shut up about the bloody baby!"
"Chris just think about it..."
"I have we are not having one."
"You haven’t though!"
"I have ... we look after molly for a couple of hours last night and she wants one she’s the one not thinking about it."
"Chris I need to talk to you seriously now."
"Is it about the bloody baby again?"
"Well... Kind of... But its important please just sit down and listen would you."
"Fine... What's going on then?"
"Well..."
"Just spit it out woman!"
"You're going to get mad at me though?"
"Just say whatever it is your going to say because I have things to do“"
"Ok well... The reason I have been going on about the baby is because... Because," Karen was welling up at this point it was hard to get it out, "I'm already pregnant Chris I'm a month gone…"
"Oh my god babe why didn't you just tell me instead of creating all this fuss," there was a moment‘s silence, “Karen why didn't you tell me?" she was in tears by now she didn't know what to say and she didn't know how Chris felt yet either.
"I was scared of what you might think so I thought I'd see if I could convince you to agree before I told you."
"That's silly honey you should have said straight away."
"I know I should have.. So you're not mad at me?"
“Well you have surprised me ... i wasn’t expecting that ... i still don’t think it is a good idea with work."
"Is that all you bloody think about work?"
"Well money isn’t just going to grow off trees is it even though you would like to think it does!"
"Well I’m not getting rid of this baby..."
“That's not what I'm asking you to do, I'm happy we are going to have a baby I'm just saying it might be hard."
"Well we'll just have to deal with it won't we because its happening and we're keeping it, we're going to be a real family."
"Is this really what you want Karen ... Really?"
"Yes it is."
"Well as longs as your happy then i am come here babe…"
Karen walked over and Chris cuddled her tightly he placed his hand on her stomach, "what are you doing?"
"Feeling the baby!"
"It doesn’t start kicking yet Chris what are you like?"
"I knew that…"
"Aw Chris think you have some baby revising to do babe."
"I think I do too," they shared a passionate kiss and they were both very excited to be having a baby and Karen was very happy to get it out her system.
Karen was now 6 months pregnant and was going for her scan today over the last couple of days the baby had been very still and there was no kicking but, Karen hadn’t thought much of it as neither Emma nor Laura kicked that much. She got out of bed and felt a sudden rush of dizziness and fell back to the bed Chris rushed over, “Are you ok Karen?"
"Yeah it’s just the hormones playing up!"
"Ok just sit there for a moment and I will get you some water.”
Karen lay back down she felt awful the worst she had felt through the whole of the pregnancy so far her head was throbbing, she had such a bad pain in her stomach and her temperature was very high Chris came back with the water, "Are you feeling better now?"
"Yeah ... thanks Chris.” Karen didn’t want to make a fuss.
"I've got to go now babe see you in a bit what times the scan?"
"11..."
"Ok ... love you." he walked over and kissed her on the lips
“Love you too.”
It was soon time for Karen to leave for her 6 month scan, when she arrived at the hospital she had made some friends with other expecting mothers that were due at the same time as her. They always meant up quite regularly when having scans, a while later and Karen was called in.
"Is Karen Barber here?"
"Yes just coming ... see you all later.”
Karen lay on the bed and pulled up her top for the midwife to do the scan.
"So how you today then Karen?"
"I'm alright thank you."
The midwife spoke to Karen for a few minutes during the scan there was a sudden silence when she saw that Karen had miscarried. "Have you been feeling ill or anything over the last week or so?"
"Actually I woke up this morning and felt fine, but when I got out of bed I felt dizzy and had to lay back down, I have had a pain in my stomach too... why is everything ok?" there was a panic in Karen’s voice as she told the midwife what had happened and she was getting worried.
"Karen I'm really sorry... you've miscarried…"
Karen was devastated to say the least. "Are you sure? no it can’t be right, there must be something..." Karen couldn’t finish her sentence she burst into tears. "I'm so sorry." The midwife gave her a reassuring pat on the back as she left, but she did not exactly feel comforted.
Karen grabbed her bag and walked out with tears pouring down her face there was a silence in the waiting room when she walked out and she ran to the car and sat there for a while just holding the scan results stroking it.
An hour later she decided it was time to get to work or Chris would be wondering where she was, which he already was. When she arrived she sat for a few minutes, again just holding the scan and stroking it, thinking how she was going to tell Chris, when the right time would be to tell him, about ten minutes later she walked in the rink .
"Where have you been, everything alright?"
"Yes sorry they were a behind."
Karen you look very upset whatever is the matter?"
Her eyes were all read and puffy and her face was still damp but she tried to pretend it was all okay, but she needed to tell Chris what had happened, she just handed him the scan.
Karen turned back to Chris and looked at him with tears pouring down her face, "The baby - it’s gone, I miscarried…" she barely finished the sentence before bursting into tears again.
"Oh honey, come here give me a hug, this isn't what I wanted at all, you know that come here.“
“No I don't feel like it, just leave me alone please."
Chris just stood in the middle of the rink as Karen ran off Jayne skated over to him, "Are you going to stand there or go and support your girlfriend?!"
"I don’t know what to do ... why has this happened ... she wanted that baby so bad.”
“I guess these things just happen... No one’s to blame and I guess we'll just have to move on."
"Ok do you think I should talk to her?"
"Yes - get your backside over there go and be with her you're what she needs right now!"
"Thank you Jayne you have no idea how much you help me!"
Chris knew exactly where Karen would be and found her straight away he went up and sat behind her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into him. "Karen I’m sorry…"
"Just go away I don’t want to see anyone!"
"Oh Karen please don’t be like that is there anything I can do to help?"
"The midwife said that in the next few weeks we would be able to try again for another baby if i wanted, but you said you don’t want a baby... so no, there’s nothing you can do but go."
"Wow I really didn't realise how serious you were about this baby, I don't know what to say I'm sorry!"
"Just go away please."
"No, I know I'm not much help but I just can't leave you; I want to just stay with you - please let me."
Chris sat with Karen for a while and thought about them trying for another baby, he knew how happy it would make Karen he hated seeing her like she was. "Karen how about we try for another baby in a few weeks time when your feeling better?"
"I'm not sure I can cope with it all again Chris…"
"Well make up your mind honey and I will do everything I can to make it happen."
"Thank you Chris babe I'm just not sure I can risk it again."
"Well do you still want a baby?"
"Yes - yes I do, I do!"
"Well how about adopting?"
Karen thought for a while about trying again, "Really Chris are you being serious about trying for another baby?"
"Yes of course honey."
"You’re not just saying this now and in a few weeks time it will be a totally different story?"
"No babe no I’m being serious, I‘ve realised how much you want a baby, and I appreciate that, as young as you‘re sure I‘m happy to do whatever you like."
"Thank you Chris, I think this will take a while to get over though."
*** “Karen what the hell is the matter with you this morning? You are so moody!”
Karen snapped back, “I am not moody!”
“You are ... I can’t be doing with you when you are moody…”
“I can’t help it Chris.”
“Oh no, come here babe…” he said ushering her towards him for a big comforting hug, after a few minutes it broke off.
“I’m going for a quick walk to get some fresh air.”
“Can I come with you?” Chris asked eagerly.
“If you must…” she sighed, she really wanted some alone time to think about things and just chill out, but she supposed it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if he came with her.
“Well if you’re going to be like that then I won’t bother!” Chris replied, quickly loosing his temper.
“No, I’m sorry Chris, I don‘t mind you coming at all of course you can come.”
Chris went over to turn the TV off while Karen went to get her shoes, she couldn’t find the other shoe to the one she had first picked up.
“Why can’t you ever find anything in this bloody house?!”
Chris just stood in the doorway waiting for her, she was getting very angry and in a bad temper.
“Where the hell is the other shoe??”
“Well it would be a lot easier if you didn’t have so many shoes!” Chris pointed out.
She was throwing the shoes around in the cupboard they then fell out all over the floor. Karen just stood there looking down at the pile of shoes, it was ridiculous but she was nearly in tears, she didn’t normally act like this - it was silly and she knew it but she couldn’t help herself.
“Are you just going to leave them there or pick them up because I’m not so you can forget about that one?” she continued to search rapidly.
“SHUT UP I’m trying to find the other shoe and not getting very far especially with you standing there doing nothing just watching me!”
“Don’t you dare raise your voice at me ... who the hell do you think you are ... move out the way I will look for you.”
Karen started to cry, “Don’t start all that bloody crying nonsense ... I don’t know what has got into you but you really need to grow up a bit - look at yourself standing there crying like a baby!”
This made Karen cry even more, “What has got into you lately why are so always so horrid to me!”
“Nothing ... you need to learn to control your emotions, you are nearly 50 not 5 you can’t just have a tantrum every time something doesn’t go right or your way.”
Karen pulled the shoe off she had on and threw it in the pile of shoes that she still hadn’t picked up and ran up the stairs all in a rush.
"Erm... where do you think you’re going you still haven’t picked up these shoes!" Chris said in a raised voice.
“Oh well there's no point going anywhere now is there!” She storms up the stairs acting like a complete two year old, slamming the door on her way.
"DONT SLAM THAT DOOR!!"
It was too late Karen had slammed the door…

"I’m surprised we still even have a door the amount of times you slam it…" Chris said under his breath he went up the stairs and burst into the bedroom this made Karen jump and she stood in the middle of the room in shock, "You can go pick all the shoes up after you’ve finished stropping.”
“Ok whatever!” she starts crying again, Karen was up there for about an hour and Chris had calmed down and felt bad for what he said so he got down on the floor on his hands and knees and started organising her shoes.
She came down the stairs to see him there, “What are you doing Chris I thought you said I was doing that.”
"Well I thought I would be nice this time and do it for you…" Karen stood at the top of the stairs and smiled at him, he only half smiled back, "but I won’t next time... and I am not going to keep putting up with these tantrums.”
“I'm sorry babe… I don't know what came over me, I've not been feeling myself lately... Here let me help you.”
"Ok... well come sit here and tell me how you've been feeling."
“I don't know... Just... Just really tired and emotional and I just want to cry all the time and I don't know why.”
"Maybe it would be a good idea if you stay off work for this week ... Eh, what do you think?"
Karen just shrugged "I...I don’t know…"
"Well I can’t decide for you I don’t know how you feel - it’s a decision you have got to make yourself... but the mood you have been in lately I would advise you take this week off.”
Karen suddenly felt a rush of dizziness she sat down abruptly on the bottom stair and put her hand to her head, letting out a little squeal.
“Karen, honey, what’s the matter, are you okay?!” Chris said very quickly showing a lot of concern and worry.
“I don't know, it just came over me, I don't feel good at all.”
“Oh dear honey do you want me to get you anything? Are you going to be okay?”
“I'm sure I’ll be fine... Just stay here with me Chris, don’t leave okay…”
"I won’t leave you babe... don’t you threat.”
They stayed up a lot of the night but eventually they went to bed and Chris cuddled Karen up close next to him stroking her forehead to comfort her and try to get her to sleep. He was very worried about her and in the morning when it was time to go, she was still fast asleep, so he left her in bed and went off to work. He wasn't sure at first but decided he would ring her in a while just to make sure she was okay.
He got to the rink in a hurry, way before Jayne - as usual. He couldn’t stop thinking about Karen and two hours later he couldn’t bear it any longer he had to ring her. Jayne could tell something was wrong but Chris liked to be quite secretive unless it was something he was proud off, then he wouldn’t be ashamed to show it off at all. He told Jayne he had to make a quick phone call and then disappeared off the rink to find his phone. He had never dialled a number so quickly; he had a sudden wave of panic as he did so and he had an urge to make sure she was okay, a little voice at the back of his head was telling him something was wrong. The phone rang but there was no answer, which made the voice much more powerful, he was getting more and more worried about her. It rang so long and eventually went to answer phone, Chris was practically sweating with worry, it seemed stupid but showed just how concerned he was. They hadn’t been together long but he treated her like a wife of thirty years.
He tried to push the thoughts behind him and went back to go and skate with Jayne and help the celebrities, but Jayne could tell something was worrying him, he had suddenly gone pale and that certainly wasn’t like Chris, he was normally full of colour and always perked up - raring to go. But now he looked like the shy, quiet little boy that needed to be shown everything, which he most certainly was not.
“Chris whatever is the matter?” Jayne asked curiously, she was worrying herself and she didn’t even know why Chris was worried in the first place.
“Nothing - it’s nothing.”
“Well there’s quite clearly something, you’re sweating and you look like you’ve seen a ghost. Who was on the phone?”
“It was no one, you don’t need to worry everything’s okay.”
“Chris tell me. I’m going to get it out of you somehow don’t you worry! How hard to you want to make this? I can be pretty mean if I want to be you know!” she said cheekily, trying to make it into a joke but it wasn’t funny.
“Okay, okay… it’s Karen.”
“What about her? What’s wrong? Chris what’s wrong? Is she okay?” a million images ran through her mind and suddenly her head filled with questions and thoughts and a panicked look swept over her animated face.
“Jayne… it’s okay don’t worry nothing too bad now you look like you’ve seen a ghost!”
“Okay well you can’t do that to me you hear me?”
“I won’t…”
“Now tell me about Karen please.”
“Oh she just had a bit of a funny turn yesterday and she said she hadn’t been feeling right lately… so I suggested she had some time off to relax, and now I feel really bad about leaving her, she didn’t exactly agree to the time off…”
“Oh dear… I do hope it’s nothing serious… if she didn’t agree then why isn’t she here?”
“Well she was still asleep when I left the house, and I thought it would do her good to stay anyway, and if she was awake when I left she wouldn’t have stayed, she’d have begged to come with me.”
“Oh…Well I’m sure she’s okay you know.” Jayne said reassuringly.
“But she didn’t answer her phone!”
“There are a number of reasons to explain that one, the most likely is that she’s still asleep, I shouldn’t be worrying yet. As soon as she realises you’re gone she’ll be rushing up here.”
It was now 2 weeks later Karen was still off work, not feeling herself and being sick, she just told Chris and Jayne not to worry she had just caught a bug. One morning while Chris was at work she thought to herself: something isn’t right and her body didn’t feel right… Karen lay in bed and thought for a while working out dates over the last couple of months, she came to the conclusion she was possibly pregnant.
She started to panic and wasn't sure why as she didn't even know for sure yet, but what if she was? How would she tell everyone? Especially Chris! She decided to walk down to the shop and get a pregnancy test and without thinking she just got up and ready and walked down there.
Meanwhile Chris was worried as hell back at the rink and everyone could tell he was, as he didn't know what was wrong with Karen. He rang her but there was no reply to begin with as Karen had put her phone at the bottom of her bag, but eventually after 5 calls she heard it ringing and on the other end was a very worried Chris, and it turned out he had gone home to check on her to find an empty house.
"Karen where the hell are you I have been worried sick!"
"I just had to pop down the shop."
"Well could have a least left a note ... you should have phoned me I could have gone for you!"
"I’m sorry I will be back in like 5 minutes…"
“Ok well at least I know where you are now...don't do that to me again you have no idea how worried I was!” “Ok bye..”
“Bye...”
Karen practically ran home and by that time Chris was back at the rink so she was alone again, so she quickly took the test and seemed like an age before the results were ready. She was so scared but excited to see what it said.
She waited and waited and waited, she was shaking with nerves and excitement all at the same time just then her phone rang it was Chris she answered with a voice that was way too excitable, but Chris thought nothing of it, just that she had obviously perked up a bit and feeling herself.
“Hello? Anyone there? Karen?
She was in tears of joy she was so incredibly happy as she read the positive results, but she didn’t really know what to do or think, she certainly wasn’t thinking about the future. For a moment she forgot she was even on the phone.
“KAREN!”
“Oh yes.. Sorry Chris, hello honey, is everything okay?”
“You tell me!”
“I’m fine…” she said half heartedly, she wasn’t going to tell him he was going to be a father again over the phone, it had to be done in person. She was still clutching the test results.
“Okay honey, as long as you’re okay. Can I leave you again now then? I’ll be home in a few hours babe.”
“No wait!”
“Yes babe?”
“I don’t want you worrying but could you come home a bit earlier? Don’t rush though, do whatever you need to do. I have a surprise.” and then she hung up the phone.
But as soon as she was done she had a horrible gut feeling, and she didn’t know what to do or how Chris was going to react, how she was going to tell him, and she only had a few hours to decide and sort everything out. When he got home he had completely forgotten what she said on the phone, so they had a quick kiss in the doorway and then Karen went to go and watch some TV, and Chris went to go and play around with his new computer. She went into the bathroom and the test was still lying on the floor and everything was brought back to her instantly.
“Chris wait, I do have something to tell you… come here!”
“What is it Karen, I’m busy at the moment, can’t it wait?”
“No, its urgent! Quick!”
Chris abandons his computer and hurries over to where Karen is standing in the bathroom, he is getting worried now, as there was an urgency in Karen’s voice all over again, and she was again clutching the test in her left hand.
